Mission Statement

It was 8:30 a.m. I just laid on the floor while L threw the tantrum of the year, screaming and crying in the next room because she didn't want to do reading first. It was for moments such as these - the ones where I wonder "what the crap was I thinking?!" - that I have a one-page mission statement in a page protector at the front of my lesson plan notebook. We created it after we made the decision to homeschool, while we were still in the research and connecting phase of the journey. It reminds me why we do what we do, how we got here, and the payoff we hope to see in the end.

Every family's mission statement will be different and unique, but here is ours...

THE WHY
MISSION
To raise confident, compassionate, wise girls who love Jesus, love others, and use their knowledge and gifts to serve both.
BIBLICAL INSPIRATION
  1.     Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all  your strength. – Mark 12:30
  2.     Love your neighbor as yourself. – Mark 12:31
  3.     And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.  You shall teach them diligently  to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way,  and when you lie down, and when you rise…you shall write them on the doorposts of your house  and on your gates. – Deut. 6:6-7, 9
  4.     It is the Lord your God you shall fear.  Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.  You shall  not go after other gods, the gods of the people who are around you. – Deut. 6:13-14
  5.     By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled  with all precious and pleasant riches. – Prov. 24:3-4
  6.     All your children shall be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children. – Is. 54:13
  7.     We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the  Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.  – Ps. 78:4
  8.     Tell your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children to another  generation.  – Joel 1:3
  9.     Where is the one who is wise?  Where is the scribe?  Where is the debater of this age?  Has not God  made foolish the wisdom of the world?  - 1 Cor. 1:20
  10.  Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.  Unless the Lord watches over the  city, the watchman stays awake in vain.  It is in vain that you rise up early and go late to rest, eating  the break of anxious toil; for he gives to his beloved sleep.  Behold, children are a heritage from the  Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.  Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s  youth.  – Ps. 127:1-4
  11.  Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.  Delight yourself in the  Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.  Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and  he will act. – Ps. 37:3-5
REASONS TO HOMESCHOOL
  ·       To be the primary influence in our children’s lives so that we may take every opportunity to point  them to Jesus, especially while they are young and impressionable
  ·       To teach them about the world from a Christian perspective
  ·       To strengthen family and sibling bonds
  ·       To allow us the time to be involved in a variety of activities (educational, social, service, etc.)
  ·       To provide an individualized education that is challenging and engaging for each child based on  her own skill level and interests
  ·       To teach real-life, practical skills

It's been a while since I've written a blog post. Ok, like years really. It's not laziness or apathy. It's not that I'm too busy, if I'm honest. I think it's probably because writing blog posts was not on the list of priorities. Today and Eternity

A glimpse inside my mind when I'm struggling: what if the chemo doesn't work? Ok, what if it does work, but not enough? The percentage they gave for "total response" was only 6% - that means that while it will certainly treat the cancer some, there's only a 6% chance that it would cure it completely. Ok, ok, but that's why we will still do surgery. But what if they can't get it all in the surgery - they said it was attached to muscle, and because I already had a double mastectomy there's not a lot of tissue to work with. Well, I guess that's why radiation may be an option again. But I always thought that once you had radiation on an area you couldn't do it on that area again? But the doctor said maybe they could - grey area. Too many grey areas. Ok, radiation wasn't a big deal for me the first time around; if I need to do it again, so be it. Hmmm, my cancer both times was on the left side though...the side where my heart is. Speaking of hea...
