January Highlights

January has been just a delightful month! With Spring-like weather, we've spent a lot of time on the playground, riding bikes, and doing school on the porch. We've settled into a good rhythm post-holidays. As I was uploading photos, I realized how many hands-on activities we were able to do with math. Not usually my favorite subject, but we had fun with it! And now some pictures of our January fun...


We got a paper airplane kit in a kid's meal and decided to head outside and make predictions about which would go furthest and straightest.


Since the hubs gets off early on Fridays (and since we were really struggling with counting change), we decided it was his turn to teach math for a day. He of course made it SO fun and exciting by counting the change up on numbers written on the driveway and letting L earn prizes.


We also worked on liquid measurements. We pulled out a tablespoon, cup, pint, quart half gallon, and gallon and played with water.

This is a phenomenal book for really little ones about Martin Luther King Jr. I've read it to them before, but I was amazed at the difference a year can make in our conversation. We also referenced our CC timeline as we talked about slave trade, the Civil War, and the Civil Rights Movement.

Perhaps my favorite day this past month was when we finally got to go "almost Amish" and walk to our co-op. Seriously beautiful weather!


More math - fractions with play dough! I just started introducing this concept, so we practiced making "cookies, pizza, and pies" and dividing them into equal parts.


This one looks like math, but the primary focus of this activity was actually reading. L often times gets overwhelmed when she sees a whole sheet of words, phrases, and sentences (from our All About Reading curriculum - fluency sheets). A friend suggested covering up sections and allotting reward amounts. Since money is where we need more practice, I let her "save her money" from the words she read to cash in on prizes like a ring pop, tootsie roll, and games on mommy's ipad.


Hoping the weather continues to be "windows-open" weather, our schedule continues to work for us, and learning continues to prove fun for all. Here's to 217!

It's been a while since I've written a blog post. Ok, like years really. It's not laziness or apathy. It's not that I'm too busy, if I'm honest. I think it's probably because writing blog posts was not on the list of priorities. Today and Eternity

A glimpse inside my mind when I'm struggling: what if the chemo doesn't work? Ok, what if it does work, but not enough? The percentage they gave for "total response" was only 6% - that means that while it will certainly treat the cancer some, there's only a 6% chance that it would cure it completely. Ok, ok, but that's why we will still do surgery. But what if they can't get it all in the surgery - they said it was attached to muscle, and because I already had a double mastectomy there's not a lot of tissue to work with. Well, I guess that's why radiation may be an option again. But I always thought that once you had radiation on an area you couldn't do it on that area again? But the doctor said maybe they could - grey area. Too many grey areas. Ok, radiation wasn't a big deal for me the first time around; if I need to do it again, so be it.
