October Highlights

October was arguably our busiest month of 2016. It was filled with library storytimes, a field trip to the farm, fun at CC (our co-op), Halloween & Fall festivities, and a Hurricane Matthew evacuation! Somehow I managed to not take any pictures trick or treating in our neighborhood, going to our church's Country Carnival, or trick or treating at the local nursing home. #badmom! But here are some of the pics I did manage to get!

HANDS ON HISTORY
This month we learned about the Renaissance Period and the Protestant Reformation...

We "sculpted" a bar of soap, like all the great artists of the Renaissance, and gave it to Nana as a gift. Super simple activity - all that is needed is soap, plastic knife, and water.


We also painted like Michelangelo. I got to bust out my Europe pictures to show them the Sistine Chapel. 

After talking about Martin Luther, the Protestant Reformation, and the printing press that followed, we took a stab at making our own paper. It was a messy activity but super fun and turned out pretty well. 

TOUCHY FEELY SCIENCE
This CC Cycle covers a lot of astronomy. We've learned about stars, the sun, planets, comets, astroids, meteoroids, and space missions so far.

This activity was more for the little one, but anything sensory is always good for L too. And it only cost $2! I got a bottle of clear hair gel and a pack of star confetti from the Dollar Tree. Put 'em in a freezer bag and against a black background and voila! Star squishy bag.

 
This was one of our CC science activities. The goal was to illustrate approximate distances of planets in relation to the sun and each other.

AND COUNTING
Most of the time with Math we keep it pretty simple with our worksheets, maybe a game like Go Fish, or sometimes playing "store" with money. It's rare we do a math-related art project, but since it's Fall, we practiced counting to 100 with cheerios to make a corn picture.

FIELD TRIPS!

Our first, and very unplanned field trip, was to visit friends as we evacuated ahead of Hurricane Matthew. We had an awesome weekend going to the Zoo, celebrating a birthday, and hanging out with some of our favorite people.

Storytime at the library is one of our favorite go-to activities. They get to see other kids, sing songs, hear someone other than me read, and do an art activity.

Field trip to the farm! We got to see a pig race, jump on a big jump pad, ride bikes, pump water to race ducks...

...go on a hay ride to pick out our pumpkins...

...and the girls' favorite - practice milking a (pretend, but very well done) cow! Maybe we'll get to try it on a real one someday.

It's been a while since I've written a blog post. Ok, like years really. It's not laziness or apathy. It's not that I'm too busy, if I'm honest. I think it's probably because writing blog posts was not on the list of priorities. Today and Eternity

A glimpse inside my mind when I'm struggling: what if the chemo doesn't work? Ok, what if it does work, but not enough? The percentage they gave for "total response" was only 6% - that means that while it will certainly treat the cancer some, there's only a 6% chance that it would cure it completely. Ok, ok, but that's why we will still do surgery. But what if they can't get it all in the surgery - they said it was attached to muscle, and because I already had a double mastectomy there's not a lot of tissue to work with. Well, I guess that's why radiation may be an option again. But I always thought that once you had radiation on an area you couldn't do it on that area again? But the doctor said maybe they could - grey area. Too many grey areas. Ok, radiation wasn't a big deal for me the first time around; if I need to do it again, so be it. Hmmm, my cancer both times was on the left side though...the side where my heart is. Speaking of hea...
